Why you’ll love this recipe
It’s no secret that Nutella and strawberries go hand in hand. It’s a combo I’ve utilised for many years! This glorious Nutella French toast is no exception.
The unsweetened golden crisp French toast pairs beautifully with the juicy strawberries and sweet Nutella. From my taste buds to yours – you need to give this recipe a try to truly believe the YUM!

Ingredients
Confused about what ingredients to buy? Not sure about a substitution? Here’s everything you might need to know…
- Strawberries – Fresh British strawberries in June and July will make this really sing. Buy the best you can get and as ripe as possible at other times of the year.
- Sugar – I used caster sugar as it dissolves quickly. You could use granulated or even brown sugar. All would work fine.
- Egg – Large free range eggs are my go to. You can use any you have/can afford. You may need another egg if yours are particularly small though.
- Milk – Any milk will work here. I used semi-skimmed cows milk, but full fat, oat milk, almond milk or any other will be delicious too.
- Salt – This seasons the French toast, helping balance out the sweetness of the Nutella and strawberries. Don’t skip it if you can help it.
- Bread – In my experience, thickly sliced white bread works best. Avoid using brown breads or thin breads if possible.
- Butter – This gives great flavour when frying your toast. You could use a flavourless oil (like sunflower or vegetable) if you prefer.
- Nutella – There are some really tasty own brand alternatives nowadays. Using those might save you a few pennies too!

Emma’s top tips
Here are tips you’ll find helpful when making Nutella French toast.
- Don’t skip macerating the strawberries. It really takes this recipe to the next level, as all the juices soak into the French toast!
- Keep an eye on your French toast when cooking. If you walk away, there’s every chance it could burn.
- Don’t be tempted to sweeten the French toast, rather than salt it. The savoury helps to balance out the sweetness.
Timings
Have limited time? Struggle with recipe timings? Or juggling around other things? Here’s some time managing info to make your life easier!
- Slicing the strawberries will only take a few minutes.
- Allow at least 10-15 minutes for your strawberries to macerate (soak in the sugar).
- Making the egg mixture and soaking the bread should take less than 5 minutes.
- Frying the French toast will take approximately 8-10 minutes from start to finish.
- Serve this dish immediately. It’s not one that can be made in advance.

Please note, this recipe includes both UK metric and US Cup measurements.
Here is what you will need to serve 1.
Ingredients
- 120g (2/3 Cup) Strawberries
- 1 tsp Caster Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 40ml (1/8 Cup) Milk
- Pinch of Salt, for seasoning
- 2 x Thick Slices of White Bread
- Knob of Butter, for frying
- 1 tbsp of Nutella
Essential Equipment
- Sharp Knife
- Chopping Board
- Small Bowl
- Spoon
- Shallow Dish
- Large Frying Pan
Instructions
First, hull and slice your strawberries (120g | 2/3 Cup) and pop them into a small bowl. Then sprinkle over the caster sugar (1 tsp), gently mix, and leave to one side.
(This is what we call ‘macerating’ strawberries. It brings out all those lovely juices!)

In a shallow dish, beat together the egg (x 1), milk (40ml | 1/8 Cup) and salt (pinch). Then heat a large frying pan over a medium heat.
Meanwhile, dip both slices of bread (thick white) into the egg mixture, covering both sides. (You can leave them to soak it up for a minute or two if you like.)

Next, add the butter (knob) to the hot pan. As soon as it’s melted, add both slices of bread. Fry for 2-3 minutes until light golden brown, then flip and repeat for the other side.

Spread the Nutella (1 tbsp) over one slice. (Being careful not to burn your hands on the pan.)

Then top with the other slice of toast, and flip it over. Fry for 1 more minute until both sides are a really nice crisp golden brown.

Finally, remove the Nutella French toast from the pan, slice it in half and place onto a serving plate. Then pour over all those beautiful strawberries and their juices, and serve straight away. ENJOY!
