What are oven temperatures in the UK?

In the UK, we use degrees celsius to measure temperatures. Be that for oven temperatures, body temperature or the weather!

It’s part of the metric system, which is used worldwide. The only exceptions being the US, Belize, Palau, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands, which still use degrees fahrenheit.

How do you know if your oven is in C or F?

Sometimes there will be either the letter C or the letter F near the temperature dial on your oven. You can also check the manufacturers manual if you still have it to hand.

Failing both those options, the number scale will usually give it away anyway. Fahrenheit are generally much higher numbers than celsius. For example, celsius oven cooking temperatures usually range between around 140°C to 240°C, whereas fahrenheit usually ranges between 284°F to 464°F.

What is the difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius in oven temperatures?

After a little research, I learnt that the main difference between fahrenheit and celsius is the reference points.

The celsius scale uses the freezing and boiling points of water as reference points, while the fahrenheit scale uses the freezing and boiling points of a mixture of salt, ice, and water as reference points.

This makes sense as to why the majority of the world use the celsius scale. As the freezing and boiling points of water are more consistent, and far more easy to replicate.

How do I change an oven from Celsius to Fahrenheit?

As a general rule, you can’t change the temperature scale an oven has been manufactured to. It’s just the way cookers are built. However, you can easily convert oven temperatures using a reliable oven temperature conversion chart, like the one later on in this post!

Is it celsius or centigrade?

Both terms actually mean the same thing. While celsius is now the more commonly used phrase, centigrade is still informally used in both French and English speaking countries.

You can learn more about it on Wikipedia in their celsius vs centigrade section.

What do gas mark numbers mean?

Gas mark numbers are only used on gas ovens. With the rise in popularity of electric and fan ovens, gas ovens tend to be the minority nowadays. So aren’t as commonly owned as they used to be.

Helpful Tips!

Here are some tips you’ll find helpful when you are using oven temperature conversions.

  • As with any conversion it won’t be 100% accurate, as the numbers are often rounded up or down for ease of use. Allow for a little leeway and remember that all ovens vary. Whether you have a conventional oven, fan oven or otherwise.
  • Don’t have internet access but do have a calculator? Use the formula in the next section to accurately convert between degrees celsius and degrees fahrenheit.
  • Don’t have internet access OR a calculator? Convert approximate temperatures using this formula for C to F: (°C x 2) + 30 = °F. Or this formula for F to C: (°F – 30) / 2 = °C. It’s much easier to do in your head!

How to convert temperature with a maths formula

There is a formula you can use to convert celsius to fahrenheit and vice versa. Although it’s not as quick and easy to do in your head as you might like! But if you’re in a pinch and have a calculator to hand – it’s a handy thing to know!

Celsius to Fahrenheit: (°C x 1.8) + 32 = °F

Fahrenheit to Celsius: (°F – 32) / 1.8 = °C

example:

Celsius to Fahrenheit: (180°C x 1.8) + 32 = 356°F

Fahrenheit to Celsius: (356°F – 32) / 1.8 = 180°C
