What’s the difference between cups and grams?

The main difference between cups and grams is what it measures. US cups uses the imperial system, and focuses on measuring with volume. Whereas the UK use the metric system, which focuses more on using grams to measure weight.

How much is 1 cup in grams?

If you’re wanting to know how many grams are in a cup, the answer is that it’s all relative. It depends what you’re measuring. For example, 1 cup of butter won’t weigh the same in grams as 1 cup of marshmallows. Cups measure volume, which is different from weight. So the grams will never be the same if you are measuring different ingredients.

What is a cup measurement in the UK?

US cups and UK cups aren’t actually the same, but they are very similar. A 1 cup liquid measure in the US is 240ml, and a 1 cup liquid measure in the UK is 250ml.

It’s a very slight difference though, and one that typically won’t affect the end results of your baking or cooking. Unless you are making multiple batches/large volumes at once, in which case it could have an impact.

How to measure ingredients accurately

I personally find weighing ingredients to be much more accurate. Volume can very easily differ from one time to the next, whereas weight is absolute.

So if you want to be able to repeat your baking and cooking successes again and again, weigh your ingredients instead of using cups and volume.

Helpful Tips!

Here are some tips you’ll find helpful when you convert g to cups.

  • Ingredients tend to pack into cups differently every time it’s done. So if you want to guarantee repeated accuracy and success in your recipes, I recommend you use weight rather than volume.
  • There are times when volume works better than weight. For example, volume ratios help greatly when you cook rice, and when you cook couscous.
  • If you really want to use cups instead of weight, spoon the ingredient into the cup then level flat with a knife for the most accurate results. (Rather than scooping/packing it in.)
  • Not all similar ingredients will measure the same. For example, caster sugar will not have the same volume or weight as dark brown muscovado sugar… even though they are both classed as sugars. Make sure you read the notes under each heading to keep your bakes as accurate as possible.
  • Use digital kitchen weighing scales for the most accurate measurements.
