Ingredients and substitutions

Confused about what ingredients to buy? Not sure about a substitution? Here’s what you need to know…

  • Sausages – I used little cocktail sausages, as they are perfectly sized and make life easy. You could also use small chipolata sausages, or cut larger ones in half.
  • Bacon – Streaky bacon is best for pigs in blankets, as they’re thin strips and fit cocktail sausages perfectly. Slicing back bacon is fiddly so I don’t recommend substituting with that. It’s entirely your preference whether you use smoked or unsmoked.
  • Rosemary – This is completely optional, but really tasty! If you don’t like rosemary, you could use thyme or sage instead. Chives also work well, as you can see in these popular bacon halloumi bites.

Recipe tips and troubleshooting

Here are tips you’ll find helpful when making these beauties.

  • You can prepare your pigs in blankets the day before you need them. Then cover and chill, and air fry just before serving.
  • Don’t overcrowd your air fryer, or they’ll steam instead of crisping up. It’s better to cook in batches if you need to.
  • Don’t season with salt, as the bacon is already very salty.
  • Remember that all ingredients and air fryers vary. Keep an eye on your pigs in blankets towards the end of the cooking time. They may need a minute or 2 more or less.

Time management

Have limited time? Struggle with recipe timings? Or juggling around other things? Here’s some time managing info to make your life easier…

  • The pigs in blankets will only take you about 5 minutes to prep and 10 minutes to air fry.
  • You can prepare your air fryer pigs in blankets up to 1 day in advance. Then cover and chill until needed. Air fry just before serving, or up to a few hours in advance. Then simply warm through.
  • You can cook your air fryer pigs in blankets from frozen, saving time on the big day! Simply prepare in advance, pop into freezer bags or tubs, and store for up to 2-3 months. Then air fry from frozen at 180ºC/356ºF for 12-14 minutes.
