What is your favourite way to have Nutella?

Would you judge me if I said straight out of the jar?? Haha! Nutella is a firm favourite in the Kitchen Mason household, that’s for sure. Whether it’s simply spread on toast, stuffed inside cookies or made into ice cream. We’re definitely open to Nutella experimentation!

It really is tasty stuff. Of course, you can use any chocolate hazelnut spread. Nutella can be expensive unless it’s on offer. And there are some really good cheaper alternatives out there, that would work just as well. There’s no need to miss out!

What can I make with Nutella?

You can make TONS of things with Nutella! Almost any sweet treat that you can bake, you can add Nutella to.

Think Nutella stuffed cookies, Nutella loaf cake, and even Nutella bread! The possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.

You don’t even have to technically bake with it. You can just add it right in there, like this gorgeous Nutella French toast!

What raising agent is used in puff pastries?

None. There are no raising agents in puff pastry dough. The rise comes from creating lots and lots of layers of butter and pastry dough. This is what gives puff pastry it’s rise and flakiness.

Nutella Puff Pastry Shapes

There are lots of shapes you can choose for Nutella pastries. There’s Nutella puff pastry triangles, Nutella swirls, puff pastry Nutella rolls, and the classic nutella puff pastry twists.

Nutella twists are the obvious choice, as they’re really simple to make and very quick. They’re even ideal for getting the little ones into the kitchen to help!

But what if you want to go the extra mile? What if you want to create something really beautiful? Make your Nutella puff pastries the Kitchen Mason way of course!

They are puff pastry Nutella twists of sorts. But with just a few extra steps, you can take a bog standard Nutella pastry, and turn it into something really special. Worthy of a patisserie shop window special!

Can you bake Nutella puff pastries in the air fryer?

I don’t recommend baking these in the air fryer. I tried, and the bottom was virtually raw. It would be fine if you could turn them over half way. But when you’ve taken the time to create a gorgeous shape, you don’t want that to get squashed and ruined. Which will happen if you turned them over in an air fryer.

How do you store baked puff pastries?

So long as there isn’t any fresh cream or fruit in your pastries (which there aren’t in this Nutella pastry recipe) I recommend storing them at room temperature in a metal container, lined with baking paper. This way they should keep well for around 3-4 days.

Nutella puff pastry ingredients and substitutions

Confused about what ingredients to buy? Not sure about a substitution? Here’s everything you might need to know…

  • Puff Pastry – Use the ready rolled puff pastry sheets to keep things easy. Baking for coeliacs? Gluten free puff pastry sheets are readily available in the supermarkets. And Nutella is naturally gluten free too!
  • Nutella – Save pennies by buying this when it’s on offer. There are some great supermarket own brand alternatives, that would also work very well.
  • Egg – This is only used for brushing your Nutella puff pastries just before baking. So any kind of egg will do.

Nutella puff pastries recipe tips

Here are a few tips you’ll find helpful when making this recipe.

  • Using ready rolled puff pastry sheets is far easier than using puff pastry blocks. Half the work is already done for you!
  • When I say ‘press down firmly’ when using the skewers to shape your pastries – I really do mean press down firmly. This will hold everything together. If you don’t, all the pieces might come apart during baking.
  • Don’t skip brushing your pastries with beaten egg before baking. This will ensure they look shiny and golden brown once baked.
  • They look beautiful just as they are. But you might like to dust them with a little powdered sugar for added sweetness and decoration once cooled.
  • Don’t continually open the oven during baking. This will effect the cooking times, as it will need to keep coming back up to the correct temperature.

Time management

Have limited time? Struggle with recipe timings? Or juggling around other things? Here’s some time managing info to make your life easier.

  • Spreading Nutella over each pastry circle will take about 5-10 minutes. As you need to take care not to tear the pastry.
  • It will take you around 20 minutes to prepare the Nutella twists into the correct shape from start to finish.
  • Make sure you allow time for your oven to preheat. If you turn it on before you start shaping, it should work out about right.
  • Baking your Nutella puff pastries takes around 18-22 minutes.
  • No need to allow time to cool completely (unless storing for later). But do let them rest for at least 5-10 minutes before eating, as the Nutella will be very hot.

Ingredients

Here is what you will need to make 6.

  • 320g (11.3 oz) Sheet of Puff Pastry, cold
  • 100-150g (1/3 Cup – 1/2 Cup) Nutella
  • 1 x Egg, for brushing

Essential equipment

  • 11cm Circle Cutter
  • Sharp Knife
  • Butter Knife *
  • 2 x Skewers
  • Large Baking Sheet
  • Baking Paper
  • Small Bowl
  • Pastry Brush

*you can use any knife if you’re careful. But using a butter knife is easiest as there are no serrations, so you’re less likely to tear the pastry.

Shaping instructions

First, preheat your oven to 180ºC/356ºF.

Next, cut 6 circles out of the pastry sheet (320g | 11.3 oz) using an 11cm circle cutter. (I didn’t have one that big, but the box my cutters came in was perfect, so I used that. Use whatever works!)

Then, using a sharp knife, score (don’t cut through yet!) a cross on each circle to segment them evenly.

6 circles of puff pastry

Now carefully spread Nutella over three quarters of every circle using a butter knife. You will need about 100-150g (1/3 Cup – 1/2 Cup) They should look like this…

Nutella spread over 3/4 of 6 puff pastry circles

Next, you can now cut each circle into 4 quarters…

Then stack each quarter on top of each other. Placing the one without Nutella, on top.

Next, cut the stack in half…

Time to shape! Lay each stack on it’s side, and slide them next to each other as shown below…

Now take your two skewers, and gently place them onto the tallest points of both stacks. Pull one towards you, and push the other away. So each piece overlaps.

When they are angled in the right direction and the shape looks good, firmly press both skewers down towards the worktop. This will ensure the pastries hold their shape, and the pieces stay together once baked.

Repeat this process for all 6 pastries. Then carefully transfer them to a baking tray lined with baking paper.

Baking instructions

Crack an egg into a small bowl and beat. Brush each pastry with the egg, then place into your preheated oven and bake for 18-22 minutes. Until shiny and golden.

If you have hot spots in your oven, you may wish to turn the tray round half way through the baking time.

Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes. Then you can either cool on a rack and save for later, or eat them immediately. The choice is yours!

  8. Repeat for the other 5 pastries, then place on a lined baking tray, and brush with beaten egg.
  9. Bake in your preheated oven for 18-22 mins. If you have hot spots in your oven, you may like to turn the tray round half way through. Allow to cool on the tray for 5-10 mins before consuming.
