Air fryer crumpet churros being dunked into Nutella

What is air fryer crumpet churros?

Recently made popular by ThisIsPlanetFood in a viral TikTok Video, I gave crumpet churros a go, and knew AT ONCE that I had to help spread the word! It’s honestly so much nicer than you think it could possibly be!

Far from traditional churro, this air fryer churro recipe utilises crumpets as a quick and easy cheat version. I have to say, the texture is on parr, if not better! Crisp on the outside, and chewy in the middle. It’s absolutely perfect. I guarantee you’ll be more than satisfied with this imitation churros in the air fryer!

What are crumpets?

Crumpets are a popular, traditional English bread, with characteristic holes all over the surface. Often enjoyed for breakfast or lunch. English people are very passionate about their crumpet toppings. Purests will tell you only butter is allowed. While others use them to sandwich other ingredients, like fried eggs and ham, or melt cheese on the top.

Whatever their choice, they remain passionate about what they believe to be the right and wrong toppings! It’s very much akin to the age old argument of loving or hating Marmite.

What are crumpets made from?

Crumpets are made from very basic ingredients. Flour, butter, yeast, salt, sugar, baking powder and warm water. If you’d like to have a go at making them yourself, here is a really easy crumpet recipe.

What can you serve with air fryer churros?

A popular choice of dip for crumpet churros is Nutella, that has been warmed through briefly in the microwave.

Other things you could try are Biscoff spread, chocolate fudge sauce and white chocolate dipping sauce.

Do you have to add cinnamon?

No, you don’t. In fact, I’m not personally a fan of cinnamon on churros myself. It’s entirely your choice whether you add the cinnamon or not.

It won’t affect the cooking times – it will only affect the overall flavour and make them look slightly darker in colour.

If you are a big cinnamon fan, you might also like honey bun cake and air fried bananas!

How to cook air fryer crumpet churros in a Ninja air fryer

I actually developed this recipe in my Ninja Foodi max dual zone 9.5L air fryer. So all you need to do is follow the recipe as is!

I’ve also made them in a Tower T17067 and they turned out great, following the same recipe. So it will be very similar, no matter what air fryer you have.

Ingredients and substitutions

Confused about what ingredients to buy? Not sure about a substitution? Here’s a few things you might need to know…

  • Crumpets – Yes, Warburtons make wonderful crumpets. But any brand will make great air fryer crumpet churros! So don’t worry too much if you can’t stretch your budget to the big brands.
  • Butter – You will taste the difference if you use a good quality butter like Lurpak. But it is very expensive. Again, don’t worry if you use a cheaper brand. These are going to taste amazing anyway!
  • Sugar – Sugar is sugar. Brand really doesn’t matter here. Use caster sugar or granulated sugar. I wouldn’t recommend switching it for a brown sugar, as this could potentially make your churros very dark in colour.
  • Cinnamon – Adding cinnamon is entirely optional. It won’t change the air frying times. But it will make your churros darker in colour. So bear this in mind when checking for done-ness.
  • Nutella – You don’t HAVE to use Nutella as your dip. You could use anything! Biscoff, white chocolate sauce, even a fruit sauce. The choice is yours!

Recipe tips and troubleshooting

Here are some tips you’ll find helpful when making this recipe.

  • If you choose to use cinnamon, this will make the colour darker. Make sure you bear this in mind when you are checking to see if your churros is done.
  • Do check your air fryer crumpet churros in the last minute of cooking. Air fryers vary, and yours may cook slightly quicker than mine.
  • Although these are definitely best eaten fresh, you can save any leftovers for later. Cool completely and store in an airtight tub at room temperature. Then simply reheat in your air fryer for 2-3 minutes, until crisp on the outside again. Don’t store for longer than 2 days.
  • Timings are given for cooking 1 or 2 crumpets (servings). If you overcrowd your air fryer, note that this will likely increase the cooking time.

Time management

Have limited time? Struggle with recipe timings? Or juggling around other things? Here’s some time managing info to make your life easier.

  • Preparing your crumpet churros (chopping the crumpet and melting the butter) will only take you 2-3 minutes.
  • Air frying your churros will take about 4-5 minutes, depending on your air fryer model.
  • It will cool quite quickly to eating temperature. So there is no need to allow for cooling time.

Here is what you will need to Serve 1.

You can make 2 servings at once. But if you make 3 or more, this may affect the cooking times.

  • 1 x Crumpet
  • 1 tbsp (15g) Butter
  • 2 tsp Caster Sugar
  • Pinch of Cinnamon, optional
  • 2 tbsp Nutella, optional

Essential equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Knife

  • Small Microwavable Pot or Bowl

Instructions

First thing’s first. Preheat your air fryer to 200ºC/392ºF for 3 minutes.

While the air fryer is preheating, chop your crumpet into pieces using a sharp knife and chopping board.

Next, place your butter (1 tbsp | 15g) into a small microwavable pot or bowl. Heat it in 10 second intervals in the microwave until completely melted.

If you don’t have a microwave, you can just place the bowl/pot of butter into your air fryer for about 20-30 seconds until it’s melted.

Melted butter in a bowl

When your air fryer is preheated, place the crumpet pieces into the drawer. Bunch it all close together, pour over the melted butter and sprinkle over the sugar (2 tsp). Toss in the cinnamon (pinch) if you’re using it.

(Bunching it close together helps most of the butter stick to the pieces, rather than it dripping through the crisping plate.)

Give the drawer a thorough shake to evenly coat, then spread the pieces out.

Air fry at 200ºC/392ºF for 4-5 minutes. You may like to shake the drawer once or twice during cooking.

The crumpet churros will be crisp and golden on the outside, and chewy in the middle.

Warm 2 tbsp of Nutella (if using) in a pot in the microwave for 10-20 seconds. Then dunk your air fryer crumpet churros into it, and make LOTS of yummy noises!
