Easy Ham Egg and Cheese Savoury French Toast

Savoury French toast

Most French toast recipes seem to be sweet in one way or another. (Take this strawberry Nutella French toast for example.) Not this bad boy. This heavenly ham egg and cheese French toast blows it’s sweet counterparts right out of the park!

Beautiful, thick French toast, topped with fine cooked ham, nutty emmental cheese and a perfect fried egg. There’s nothing about that last sentence that isn’t amazing. You need this tasty breakfast in your life!

Ingredients

Here is what you will need to serve 2.

For the French toast

  • 1 Egg
  • 40ml (1/8 Cup + 1 tbsp) Milk
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 2 Thick Slices of White Bread
  • Knob of Butter, for frying

For the toppings

  • 2x Eggs
  • 2 Slices of Ham
  • 2 Slices of Emmental Cheese

Essential equipment

  • Large Frying Pan
  • Shallow Dish

French toast instructions

First heat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Then in a shallow dish, beat together the egg (x 1), milk (40ml | 1/8 Cup + 1 tbsp) and salt (pinch).

Lay both slices of bread (2 x thick slices of white bread) in the egg mixture and allow to soak for a few seconds, then turn them over and repeat for the other side.

Then drop a knob of butter into the hot frying pan, swill around the pan until melted and add both slices of bread into the pan. (If both won’t fit, cook one at a time.)

Next, fry for 2-3 minutes, until light golden brown, then flip and repeat for the other side.

If only one fit in your pan, repeat for the other slice then remove the toast and keep warm.

Meanwhile, add a little more butter to the pan if you need to and crack in the 2 eggs. Fry for 3-4 minutes, or until the yolk is cooked to your liking. (Cook one at a time if there is not enough room in your pan.)

How to assemble

Now all that’s left to do is assemble. Get two plates, place a slice of French toast on each one and top with the ham (2 x slices), cheese (2 x slices) and fried eggs. Crack over a little black pepper if you like, then serve immediately, and enjoy this marvellous masterpiece!

This is delicious. No fuss, no frills, just damn delicious. Simple is quite often best, and this recipe is a prime example. Food doesn’t have to be overly complex or take hours to prepare for it to taste amazing. It’s one of the things I love most about cooking and baking! Anyone can do it.   4. Next, add a little more butter to the pan if needed, and crack in the eggs. Fry for 3-4 mins, until cooked to your liking.
  5. To assemble, place each slice of golden French toast on a plate. Then top with slices of ham, cheese and the fried eggs. Finish with a little cracked black pepper if you wish. Serve and enjoy!
