Is it cheaper to boil an egg in an air fryer?

Yes! It’s definitely cheaper to boil an egg in an air fryer. Think about it. To boil an egg in a pan, you have to first either boil the kettle, or bring a pan of water to the boil. Both require lots of energy, which costs money.

When you make them in an air fryer, you literally put them in, turn it on a low temperature for 7 – 11 minutes, and they’re done. It takes less time and less energy. Making it much cheaper!

Do note that, when I say ‘boil an egg’ in the air fryer, there actually isn’t any water involved. It only uses the dry heat to cook it. It really is that simple!

What temperature do you cook air fryer boiled eggs at?

Can you boil an egg in an air fryer without water?

Yes! Although technically it’s not really boiling an egg, it’s baking it. But you achieve the same results.

In this easy air fryer boiled eggs recipe, there is no water required. You simply preheat your air fryer for 1-2 mins and pop in your eggs. Then set the temperature and time, and that’s it! No water, no faff, no judgement calls.

How long does it take to boil eggs in an air fryer?

Whether it’s soft, jammy or hard – It’s all down to the temperature and timings. Bear in mind that your chosen ingredients and equipment may affect these though.

The size and shape of your eggs, and what air fryer you’re using, can very much affect the outcome.

To help remove the guesswork, I tested different sized eggs and various timings. Here is a guide to help you:

Ingredients

There is only 1 ingredient in this recipe – eggs!

The type you buy is entirely up to you! But do note that the cooking times may change based on your choice. (See How long does it take to boil eggs in an air fryer for help with this.)

I always recommend using free range organic eggs. Personally, I feel the living conditions of caged and barn hens is appalling. And I’d rather not encourage it.

However, I totally understand that the cost of living has risen to extreme levels. And money is an important factor. Be assured that all eggs will cook as per the recipe. Whatever you choose. You will get no judgment here! Cooking should bring us together, not divide us!

  • The shape of your eggs could affect the cooking times. Some are tall and thin, others are short and more round. You’ll get the hang of it the more you make them.

Then place your egg directly into the drawer. Do not line the drawer, or place your egg on anything else.

An egg in an air fryer draw

Depending on the size of your egg, and whether you want soft, jammy or hard boiled – cook at 150ºC (302ºF) for the following time:

  • 60g – Soft 7-8 mins / Jammy X / Hard 9 mins
  • 65g – Soft 8 mins / Jammy 9 mins / Hard 10 mins
  • 70g – Soft 8-9 mins / Jammy 10 mins / Hard 11 mins

If your making soft boiled (dippy eggs) – place in an egg cup, slice the top off, and serve immediately with toast.

If you’re making jammy or hard boiled eggs – gently crack the egg all over, then place immediately into a bowl of very cold water for about 10 minutes. (This prevents that unsightly green tinge around the yolk.)

You may wish to change the water once or twice if it warms up too much.

Once the eggs are cold, peel them under water (this makes it easier). Then slice and serve however you like!
