Indulgent Homemade Hot Chocolate

Sharing is caring!

I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me until recently, just how easy it is to make homemade hot chocolate. It’s literally as easy as making a mug of the shop bought stuff! You can seriously go to town when you’re at home too. You can very easily change up the flavour, the richness or the toppings. Homemade hot chocolate is exactly like a hug in a mug… you need to try it and see for yourself!

If you’re looking more in terms of a homemade gift, hot chocolate sticks are a thoughtful present. I recommend using a good quality, high cocoa content chocolate in those – just as you would in a Velvetiser.

Here is what you will need to make 1 large mug. (Easily multiplied by however many people you are making it for.)

Ingredients

  • 400ml Milk
  • 2 tbsp Golden Caster Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Mini Marshmallows, To Serve (Optional)
  • Chocolate Sauce, To Serve (Optional)

Essential Equipment

  • Large Pan
  • Mug(s)

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, gently warm the milk over a medium heat until hot – but not boiling.

Then add in the rest of the ingredients…

And give it a really good whisk until everything is combined and dissolved.

That is literally it! Pour it into your chosen mug and top with whatever your heart desires. I very happily chose a mountain of marshmallows topped with lashings of chocolate sauce…

I’m pretty sure that is what all Hot Chocolate should look like! I mean seriously, you can’t tell me you don’t want to dive head first into that gorgeous & cosy warm mug of magic can you?!

Some of you will say that the vanilla extract & salt is not necessary. I am here to tell you otherwise. Both those ingredients round off the flavour wonderfully & make it WAY better than what you can buy in the shops. I do recommend using a very good quality vanilla extract like Nielsen Massey‘s though, it makes all the difference. And just so you know, I’m not getting paid to say that. That’s my honest opinion. I’ve used that brand for years and have never found another that comes even close to it’s incredible flavour! Highly recommend it.
